Ten new neutron stars for Terzan 5

Ten new neutron stars for Terzan 5

Astronomers find and study multiple rare and unusual pulsars in dense stellar cluster using MeerKAT in South Africa and the U.S. Green Bank Telescope.

An international team led by researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy, and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory has discovered ten rapidly rotating neutron stars in the globular cluster Terzan 5. Many of them are in unusual and rare binaries, including a potential candidate for a record-breaking double neutron star, a pulsar in an extremely elliptical orbit, and several “spider” systems in which the neutron stars are evaporating their companions. These finds in data from the MeerKAT radio telescope array increase the number of known millisecond pulsars in this very dense stellar cluster by more than a quarter to a total of 49. The research team hopes to discover more pulsars in possibly even more extreme binaries: They plan to sift through all Terzan 5 data recorded with MeerKAT by using the massive computing power of the citizen science project Einstein@Home run at the MPI for Gravitational Physics.

Zooming in on a surprising ring

Zooming in on a surprising ring

traces cold gas, seen here in blue, whereas the VLT, with its new Enhanced Resolution Imager and Spectrograph (ERIS), traces warm gas, shown in red. Thanks to these detailed observations, the team discovered that the gas in this extreme galaxy was rotating in an organized fashion rather than in the chaotic way expected after a galactic collision – a surprising result! This shows convincingly that mergers aren’t always needed for a galaxy to become a HyLIRG. Read more in the ALMA press release.

I-HOW: Open call for applications for IAU Workshops

I-HOW: Open call for applications for IAU Workshops

The IAU calls for applications for workshops under the IAU Hands-On Workshops (I-HOW) initiative.

Motivation: Vast amounts of astronomical data are currently available in archives scattered around the world, for instance in the archives of telescopes run by big consortia, like ESO, NSF’s NOIRLab, NRAO, ALMA, ATCA, LOFAR, etc., or space missions developed by NASA and ESA, or by national space agencies like JAXA, ISRO, etc.

The I-HOW is an initiative to train young scientists in developing countries in accessing, analysing and using those data for their research projects.

The call for workshops in 2025-2026 has opened on the 15 June 2024.

Submission deadline: 31 August 2024

ERAC: Opinion on the next Framework Programme for Research & Innovation

The European Research Area and Innovation Committee (ERAC ) adopted the ERAC Opinion on Guidance for the next Framework Programme for Research & Innovation. With this ERAC provides advice to the Council, the Commission and the Member States on strategic R&I policy issues and recommendations on the next EU Framework Programme.

ESFRI Roadmap 2026 Information Day

ESFRI organises an Information Day, on 8 October 2024 in Brussels, to kick-off the process of updating its Roadmap - to be completed in 2026. Top Roadmap stakeholders will provide a thorough presentation of the requirements, the procedure and the methodology of selection of proposals for new RI Projects to enter the Roadmap. There will also be further presentations on the monitoring of ESFRI RI projects already on the Roadmap. Read more here.

European Research Executive Agency: Report on Researchers' Skills

The report addresses researcher skills, as part of a series of three feedback to policy reports, that take stock of the progress and promising practices generated by a selection of EU-funded projects on skills, research assessment reform and the R&I activities of the Horizon 2020 ‘Science with and for Society’ (SWAFS) projects supporting the alliances.
