Second-Generation Starlink Satellites Leak 30 Times More Radio Interference, Threatening Astronomical Observations

Observations with the LOFAR (Low Frequency Array) radio telescope last year showed that first generation Starlink satellites emit unintended radio waves that can hinder astronomical observations. New observations with the LOFAR radio telescope, the biggest radio telescope on Earth observing at low frequencies, have shown that the second generation ’V2-mini’ Starlink satellites emit up to 32 times brighter unintended radio waves than satellites from the previous generation, potentially blinding radio telescopes and crippling vital research of the Universe. Astronomers track bubbles on a star’s surface in the most detailed video yet

For the first time, astronomers have captured images of a star other than the Sun in enough detail to track the motion of bubbling gas on its surface. The images of the star, R Doradus, were obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), in July and August 2023. They show giant, hot bubbles of gas, 75 times the size of the Sun, appearing on the surface and sinking back into the star’s interior faster than expected.

This research was presented in the paper One month convection timescale on the surface of a giant evolved star (DOI) published on 11 September 2024 on Nature.

SKAO: exciting milestone achieved withrelease of the ‘first fringes’ from the Observatory’s SKA-Low telescope

First fringes refers to the successful correlation of data from separate antennas stations – in this case two stations – signifying that SKA-Low has begun to work as an interferometer.

Both of the SKA Observatory’s telescopes – SKA-Low in Western Australia and its counterpart SKA-Mid in South Africa’s Northern Cape – are radio interferometers. They work by combining data from antennas spread over large distances, creating virtual telescopes equivalent in size to the separation between the furthest antennas for each telescope.

By using interferometry, a technique which uses the interference of electromagnetic waves to extract information, the two SKAO’s telescopes will transform our understanding of the Universe. “This is the day that the SKA Observatory as a scientific facility was born,” SKAO Director-General Professor Philip Diamond said. The MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey: A million radio sources probe the motion of the solar system and provide a fundamental test of cosmology

Using data from the MeerKAT radio telescope, an international team of astronomers from the MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey (MALS) collaboration have compiled the largest catalog of radio sources from any MeerKAT survey to date. With this catalog, they were able to make a measurement of the cosmic radio dipole, a cosmological effect that arises from the Earth’s motion through the Universe, and provides an important test of our theories of cosmology at the largest scales. This new measurement demonstrates the value of the sensitive MeerKAT data, and shows that such deep data provide extremely valuable insights into the origin of the cosmic dipole effect.
The results are published in Astronomy & Astrophysics: The MeerKAT Absorption Line Survey Data Release 2: Wideband continuum catalogues and a measurement of the cosmic radio dipole (DOI).

New AtLAST Newsletter issued

New AtLAST Newsletter issued

AtLAST is a concept for a next generation 50-meter class single-dish astronomical observatory operating at sub-millimeter and millimeter wavelengths, run as a facility telescope by an international partnership and powered by renewable energy.

AtLAST has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 951815.

Furthermore, AtLAST announced that the European Commission has approved the new grant proposal for the post-design study phase of AtLAST. The new Horizon Europe project, "Consolidating plans for the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST2)" will start in early 2025.

Evaluation study of the European framework programmes for research and innovation for an innovative Europe

This study assesses the effectiveness of interventions and actions supporting innovation under the Horizon Europe Framework Programme, identifying their achievements, successes, and areas for improvement. The programme parts analysed in this study include the European Innovation Council, the European Innovation Ecosystems, and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology Knowledge and Innovation Communities. Additionally, the study includes an analysis of the overall contribution of the Framework Programme to the Innovative Europe objectives, including actions by the Joint Research Centre.

Open research Europe: Towards a collective open access publishing service: scoping report

The EC published the report Open research Europe: Towards a collective open access publishing service: scoping report.

This report puts forward a vision for Open Research Europe as a collective non-profit open access publishing service for the public good. It includes a rationale for the vision, the EU policy and political context, a value proposition and principles for the operation of acollective ORE.

Performance of European partnerships

This report on the Performance of European Partnerships, also known as the Biennial Monitoring Report (BMR), aims to provide a strong evidence base to guide the implementation of partnerships and inform strategic discussions on the effectiveness of the new policy approach to European Partnerships in Horizon Europe and, where relevant, how it should evolve. Besides the partnerships’ contributions to the green and digital transitions, and resilience, this year’s edition looks at their role in technological sovereignty and international positioning of European R&I.

The Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development launch the Research and Innovation Careers Observatory

The Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), with the support from the Horizon Europe programme, launched the Research and Innovation Careers Observatory (ReICO). This initiative will provide reliable data on research and innovation careers in EU and OECD countries. Providing researchers and innovators with attractive and sustainable careers is key to boosting European competitiveness and retaining talent. A better understanding of career paths is key in designing policies, improving their careers, while bringing economic benefits to the EU economy. The signing ceremony for the official start of the project took place in Brussels at the conference “European Research Area: Fostering Greater Integration. Advancing Competitiveness”.

European ALMA Regional Centre

The European ALMA Regional Centre (ARC) provides the interface between the ALMA project and the European science community. The ARC is staffed by scientists with expertise in radio astronomy and interferometry and it supports its users throughout the lifetime of a project, from proposal preparation to data analysis. Users that want to visit an ARC node for a face-to-face visit can apply for funding through the ORP project. 

Westerbork Apertif Long Term Archive

ALTA offers to the world-wide astronomical community free virtual access to data and scientific products produced from all sky surveys of the Northern sky that will be conducted with the new Apertif frontend of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), as well as tools to query, further exploit and perform data mining of these products adaptable to diverse research goals. The access/funding offered through the ORP project.

LOFAR Long Term Archive

LTA is a long-established archive and access facility supporting the international LOFAR telescope. It is currently the largest radio astronomical archive in the world already exceeding 45 PB from LOFAR’s past 10 years of operations. The LTA provides a central and key resource for all observed LOFAR astronomical science programs where the data become public within 12 months of first creation. The access/funding is offered through the ORP project.
