First ever binary star found near our galaxy’s supermassive black hole

An international team of researchers has detected a binary star orbiting close to Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy. It is the first time a stellar pair has been found in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole. The discovery, based on data collected by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (ESO’s VLT), helps us understand how stars survive in environments with extreme gravity, and could pave the way for the detection of planets close to Sagittarius A*. It is the first star pair ever found near a supermassive black hole. The cut-out shows  the binary system as detected by the SINFONI spectrograph on ESO’s Very Large Telescope. While the two stars cannot be discerned separately in this image, the binary nature of D9 was revealed by the spectra captured by SINFONI over several years. These spectra showed that the light emitted by hydrogen gas around D9 oscillates periodically towards red and blue wavelengths as the two stars orbit each other.

Researchers explore the low-frequency gravitational wave universe with MeerKAT

The most sensitive map of the gravitational wave sky to date was produced by an international collaboration of researchers. To achieve this goal, the scientists analysed 4.5 years of pulsar data taken with the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa, one of the most powerful radio telescopes in the world. The MeerKAT Pulsar Timing Array collaboration presents its latest results in a series of three papers published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society:

• The MeerKAT Pulsar Timing Array: Maps of the gravitational-wave sky with the 4.5 year data release;

• The MeerKAT Pulsar Timing Array: The first search for gravitational waves with the MeerKAT radio telescope;

• The MeerKAT Pulsar Timing Array: The 4.5-year data release and the noise and stochastic signals of the millisecond pulsar population

Moving towards a close-up of a black hole and its jets

After taking the first images of black holes, the ground-breaking Event Horizon Telescope and the Global mm-VLBI Array poised to reveal how black holes launch powerful jets into space. Now, a research team led by scientists from the Onsala Space Observatory, the University Würzburg and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy has shown that the EHT will be able to make exciting images of a supermassive black hole and its jets in the galaxy NGC 1052. The measurements, made with interconnected radio telescopes, also confirm strong magnetic fields close to the black hole’s edge. Read more here.

M87's Powerful Jet Unleashes Rare Gamma-ray Outburst

The shadow of the black hole in Messier 87 has been imaged with global radio array telescopes over the last years. Joint campaigns have been coordinated annually ever since. An international team of researchers has just released the results of a large campaign on M87 of Event Horizon Telescope and Global mm-VLBI Array observations in 2018, involving over twenty-five ground-based and space-based telescopes.

The team report a spectacular flare at multiple wavelengths from the powerful relativistic jet emanating from the very centre of the same galaxy.

This study reveals the first observation in over a decade of a high-energy gamma-ray flare. Photons up to thousands of billions of times the energy of visible light from the supermassive black hole M87* were detected after obtaining nearly simultaneous spectra of that galaxy with the broadest wavelength coverage ever collected. BRAND receiver successfully tested

BRAND receiver successfully tested

Initially developed in 2020 under the RadioNet project (EC GA 730562), the BRAND (BRoad bAND) receiver has been successfully tested and partially commissioned at the Effelsberg 100-meter radio telescope, marking a significant advancement in radio astronomy. Designed by Gino Tuccari (INAF) with contributions from MPIfR, OSO, ASTRON, Yebes Observatory, and Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre, the receiver supports VLBI and single-dish observations across an impressive continuous frequency range of 1.5 to 15.5 GHz.

Beyond Effelsberg, the BRAND receiver could replace multiple single-purpose receivers at other EVN stations, offering significant cost and operational efficiencies.

European Charter for Access to Research Infrastructures: Principles and guidelines for access and related services

The European Charter for Access to Research Infrastructures sets out non-regulatory principles and guidelines to be used as a reference when defining Access policies for Research Infrastructures and related services. While not having any legally binding nature, Research Infrastructures are encouraged to use this Charter as a reference when updating existing or defining new Access policies. Competitiveness Council - Strengthening the competitiveness of the EU, reinforcing the European Research Area and overcoming its fragmentation

Open call: MAGIC observation proposals

Open call: MAGIC observation proposals

The MAGIC collaboration encourages external scientists to propose observations using the MAGIC telescopes, with observation time granted by the Time Allocation Committee (TAC) based on scientific merit. There is no predefined allocation of time between internal or external collaborators.

The ACME project enables transnational access (TA) on the basis of scientific merit to a wide range of complementary astroparticle, high energy and astronomical Research Infrastructures to perform new science of multi-messenger astrophysics. ACME project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe Research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 101131928

European ALMA Regional Centre

The European ALMA Regional Centre (ARC) provides the interface between the ALMA project and the European science community. The ARC is staffed by scientists with expertise in radio astronomy and interferometry and it supports its users throughout the lifetime of a project, from proposal preparation to data analysis.

Westerbork Apertif Long Term Archive

ALTA offers to the world-wide astronomical community free virtual access to data and scientific products produced from all sky surveys of the Northern sky that will be conducted with the new Apertif frontend of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), as well as tools to query, further exploit and perform data mining of these products adaptable to diverse research goals. The access/funding offered through the ORP project.

LOFAR Long Term Archive

LTA is a long-established archive and access facility supporting the international LOFAR telescope. It is currently the largest radio astronomical archive in the world already exceeding 45 PB from LOFAR’s past 10 years of operations. The LTA provides a central and key resource for all observed LOFAR astronomical science programs where the data become public within 12 months of first creation. The access/funding is offered through the ORP project.
