New LOFAR Discovery: Unusual Radio Pulses from a White Dwarf System

Astronomers have identified a baffling new cosmic radio source - ILT J163430+445010 -emitting bright radio pulses every 14 minutes with unexpected shifts between circular and linear polarization. The source is linked to a white dwarf binary exhibiting a unique companion-triggered radio burst mechanism. This discovery challenges existing models of stellar radio emissions and may open a new window into understanding dead stars as radio beacons. This research was published in the scientific journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

The finding was made possible by the LOFAR telescope and highlights the power of sensitive, wide-field radio surveys. It also underscores the need for continued international collaboration to interpret such rare and complex astrophysical phenomena. Read the full ASTRON press release

ALMA Uncovers Hidden Structures in the Universe’s First Galaxies

Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have unveiled intricate internal structures within early galaxies - just 1 billion years after the Big Bang - as part of the CRISTAL survey. By tracing ionised carbon ([C II]) emission in 39 typical star-forming galaxies and combining it with Hubble and JWST imagery, the team has revealed: Clumps of star formation spanning thousands of light-years, extended cold gas envelopes beyond stellar regions - fuel for future stars, and Signatures of rotational motion, hinting at early disk formation.

ALMA’s sensitivity sheds light on the complex “cosmic dawn” environments, transforming mere smudges of light into detailed portraits of galaxy evolution. This research was by Herrera-Camus et al. in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Read the full ALMA release.

EHT Reveals Why M87*’s Ring Isn’t a Perfect Circle

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration has uncovered the reason why the stunning image of the M87* black hole features a ring that appears slightly elliptical rather than a perfect circle. The distortion - ranging from 2% to 20% - is attributed to turbulent plasma swirling near the black hole’s event horizon.

This insight is based on a new study, “Origin of the ring ellipticity in the black hole images of M87”, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Researchers used the current resolution of the EHT to analyze how inhomogeneities in the plasma flow distort the ring’s shape. These findings enhance our understanding of black hole environments and enrich the striking imagery first captured in 2017. Read the full press release.

Exoplanet Triggers Stellar Fireworks

Astronomers have found the first clear evidence of a planet triggering flares on its host star. Using data from NASA’s TESS and ESA’s CHEOPS space telescopes, an international team led by ASTRON and the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) observed powerful bursts of energy from the young star HIP 67522 - coinciding with the orbit of its closely orbiting planet.

The planet, a hot giant orbiting the star every seven days, appears to ignite stellar flares through magnetic interactions each time it passes in front of the star. These flares not only reveal a new kind of star–planet connection, but may also help explain the planet’s puffed-up atmosphere, as later confirmed by JWST observations. This breakthrough offers new insight into how planets can influence their stars and opens a fresh window into the evolution of planetary systems. Read full press release from ASTRON.

Frontiers of Science Award for Tests of Einstein’s Gravity

The international research team led by Prof. Michael Kramer of the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR) has been awarded the prestigious Frontiers of Science Award 2025 in the category Astrophysics and Cosmology – Theory.

Their groundbreaking study, “Strong-Field Gravity Tests with the Double Pulsar”, published in Physical Review X in 2021, presents the most precise tests to date of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity under extreme conditions. The award was presented during the International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) in Beijing, China. Read the full announcement from MPIfR

Fist Announcement: The 16th East Asian VLBI Workshop

The 16th East Asian VLBI Workshop (EAVW2025) will be held on November 7-20, 2025 in Pyeongchang, Korea, home to the newly constructed KVN Pyeongchang telescope, the fourth station of the Korean VLBI Network.  EAVW2025 will highlight cutting-edge developments in VLBI science and technology, the integration of new telescopes such as the Thai National Radio Telescope, and the growing need for ultra-high-speed to support advanced observations. ACME 1st MAGIC Open Data-Analysis School

ACME 1st MAGIC Open Data-Analysis School

The workshop will be held on the 8-9 of September 2025 online and is organized by and in the framework of ACME project. Scientists with interests in the analysis of VHE (E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray data are invited to join this two-day remote workshop to learn how to analyse the MAGIC telescopes data. A data set of MAGIC archival observations will be publicly released for the school. The analysis will be conducted with Gammapy, an open-source software for gamma-ray astronomy. Read more.

EU Publishes AI Code of Practice

The European Commission has released the final General-Purpose AI Code of Practice, a voluntary framework to help model providers comply with the upcoming AI Act. Co-developed with input from over 1,000 stakeholders, the Code covers transparency, copyright, and systemic risk management for advanced models. It will support compliance ahead of the AI Act’s general-purpose model rules taking effect on 2 August 2025. Voluntary signatories will benefit from reduced administrative burden and greater legal clarity. Read more here.

Call for applications: AI Act Advisory Forum

The European Commission (DG CONNECT) invites universities, research institutions, and other stakeholders to apply for the new AI Act Advisory Forum. The Forum will provide technical advice on implementing the EU AI Act and include up to 200 experts from academia, civil society, and industry. Applications are open until 14 September 2025. EC Presents Draft EU Budget for 2028–2034

The European Commission unveiled its draft proposal for the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) covering the period 2028–2034. The proposed budget amounts to nearly €2 trillion, representing 1.26% of the EU’s Gross National Income. The Commission aims to reform the EU budget to make it more efficient, flexible, and targeted. To finance this modernised budget, the proposal includes both the introduction of new own resources and a revision of existing ones -expected to generate up to €58.5 billion annually, easing pressure on national budgets. New EU Initiative: European Competitiveness Fund for Strategic Future Investments

The EU has launched the European Competitiveness Fund to support breakthrough technologies and strengthen the internal market—following recommendations from the Letta and Draghi reports. The fund streamlines access to EU financing through unified rules and a single entry point, targeting investments in four key areas: Green transformation and decarbonisation, Digital transformation, Health, biotechnology, agriculture, and bioeconomy, and Defence and space. By effectively combining public and private capital, the fund aims to maximise the impact of every euro invested. Read the proposal more here.

EC Unveils Proposal for Framework Programme 10 (FP10)

On 16 July 2025, the EC published its proposal for the FP10 (2028-2034), which will continue under the name Horizon Europe. The programme is set to be funded with €175 billion and will be structured around four pillars: Excellent Science, Competitiveness & Society, Innovation, and European Research Area As in the current programme, both research and innovation projects will be supported, with no major changes to participation rules, funding conditions, or success rates. Support for collaborative projects, as well as individual researchers and companies, will remain a core feature. Read the proposal here.

Public Consultation: Gender Equality Strategy 2026–2030

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the upcoming Gender Equality Strategy 2026–2030. You can submit your feedback until Monday, 11 August. The strategy outlines long-term priorities and actions to advance gender equality in research and innovation, building on the achievements of the  Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025. Read more here.

European ALMA Regional Centre

The European ALMA Regional Centre (ARC) provides the interface between the ALMA project and the European science community. The ARC is staffed by scientists with expertise in radio astronomy and interferometry and it supports its users throughout the lifetime of a project, from proposal preparation to data analysis.

 

Westerbork Apertif Long Term Archive

ALTA offers to the world-wide astronomical community free virtual access to data and scientific products produced from all sky surveys of the Northern sky that will be conducted with the new Apertif frontend of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), as well as tools to query, further exploit and perform data mining of these products adaptable to diverse research goals. .

LOFAR Long Term Archive

LTA is a long-established archive and access facility supporting the international LOFAR telescope. It is currently the largest radio astronomical archive in the world already exceeding 45 PB from LOFAR’s past 10 years of operations. The LTA provides a central and key resource for all observed LOFAR astronomical science programs where the data become public within 12 months of first creation.
