By connecting Westerbork and LOFAR, two of the biggest radio telescopes in the world, astronomers have discovered that a simple binary wind cannot cause the puzzling periodicity of a Fast Radio Burst after all. The bursts may come from a highly magnetized, isolated neutron star. The radio detections also show that Fast Radio Bursts, some of the most energetic events in the Universe, are free from shrouding material. That transparency further increases their importance for cosmology. The results appear in Nature this week. For details read the ASTRON article Periodic Fast Radio Burst found bare, unobscured by strong binary wind. Image: ©Joeri van Leeuwen

After almost a decade of work, an international team of astronomers has published the most detailed images yet seen of galaxies beyond our own, revealing their inner workings in unprecedented detail. The images were created from data collected by the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR), a radio telescope built and maintained by ASTRON. LOFAR is a network of more than 70,000 small antennae spread across nine European countries, with its core in Exloo, the Netherlands. The results come from the team’s years of work, led by Dr Leah Morabito at Durham University. The team was supported in the UK by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). On 23 July 2021, the European Commission published a pre-draft of the Annotated Model Grant Agreement (AGA) for Horizon Europe on the Funding & Tenders Portal. This document is intended to support the contractual partners in interpreting the grant agreement and contains further explanations and examples for related assistance. Find all relevant guidance documents and the pre-draft of Annotated Model Grant Agreement here. The European Commission has published the Annual Report on Research and Technological Development Activities of the European Union and Monitoring of Horizon 2020 in 2020. This report provides a concise, non-exhaustive overview of key research and innovation (R&I) activities taken in 2020. It refers to the Horizon Dashboard for more detailed monitoring data. The ERC has published a new guide for scientific progress reporting. More information can be found on the ERC website and at this link.

The call for proposals for the European VLBI Network is open. EVN Travel support is possible through the OPTICON RadioNet Pilot project (ORP), funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement No 101004719. For eligible projects, this trans-national access support would include travel reimbursement for visiting JIVE to analyse and process your EVN, EVN+e-MERLIN, or global VLBI data. All regular proposals should be submitted through the Northstar submission tool. Submission deadline: October 1, 2021 16:00 UTC

The European ALMA Regional Centre (ARC) provides the interface between the ALMA project and the European science community. The ARC is staffed by scientists with expertise in radio astronomy and interferometry and it supports its users throughout the lifetime of a project, from proposal preparation to data analysis. Users that want to visit an ARC node for a face-to-face visit can apply for funding through the ORP (Opticon Radionet Pilot).
