Next Generation Very Large Array Strongly Endorsed by Decadal Survey

The Astronomy and Astrophysics Decadal Survey (Astro2020) of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences has published its report and the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) received high priority for new ground-based observatories to be constructed during the coming decade. The report was the culmination of a lengthy process aimed at developing a comprehensive research strategy and vision for a decade of transformative science at the frontiers of astronomy and astrophysics. The Caroline Herschel Medal, the first award in 2022, will go to a woman researcher based in Germany. The Medal is awarded to an established researcher for their outstanding contribution to the field of Astrophysics. Only women may apply and self-nominations are welcome.

European ARC Network launches virtual talk series: ALMA recounts of Cosmic Conundrums

The European ALMA Regional Centre (ARC) network is launching the new virtual talk series ALMA recounts of Cosmic Conundrums. In every talk of this series a major astronomical question is discussed. The aim of the series is to highlight the unparalleled contribution of ALMA to the broader astronomical landscape and to provide an outlook towards the future.

The first talk of this series will take place December 1, 2021. The talks will be broadcasted through the Youtube channel of the European ALMA Regional Centre network and will remain available on the same channel afterwards.

SKAO News

• SKAO has signed a cooperation agreement with the National Research Council of Canada for two years while the country’s federal government gives membership of the SKAO full consideration

• SKAO’s Indigenous astronomy art exhibition Shared Sky has opened in Leiden’s Old Observatory in the Netherlands, and will be available to the public until May 2022. The exhibition is sponsored by Leiden University, ASTRON, and the SKAO.

Launch of the 2021 ESFRI Roadmap on Research Infrastructures in Europe

The ESFRI Roadmap 2021 Launch Event that was planned to take place on December 7, 2021, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, has been transformed to a fully digital event, due to pandemic restrictions. ESFRI will present the 2021 ESFRI Roadmap on Large Scale Research Infrastructures during a half-day online conference. The event is hosted by the Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the EU, as part of the ESFRI Days event, and will be live streamed in full via ESFRI YouTube channel.

Registration for this event is optional, but highly encouraged by the organizers. Register HERE.

New ERA conference: Conference summary report and recommendations published

The New ERA Conference was held on October 26/27, 2021 in Slovenia. Find here the summary published on November 23, 2021, with a summary of a large amount of ideas discussed at the conference by the policy officials, researchers, funders, research performing organizations and industry in the form of recommendations.

Council of the European Union adopted New Pact and governance structure for the European Research Area (ERA)

The Council on November 26, 2021 adopted conclusions on the governance of the European Research Area (ERA) and a Pact for research and innovation (R&I) in Europe, setting out priorities and a streamlined governance framework for the ERA, including an ERA policy agenda for 2022-2024.

Report on monitoring the open access policy of H2020 published

The European Commission published a report called Monitoring the open access policy of Horizon 2020. The report examines, monitors and quantifies compliance with the open access requirements of Horizon 2020, for both publications and research data.

Not only has this study been commissioned to measure current compliance to open access research policies under Horizon 2020, but to also plan for future grant programs to support beneficiaries in the areas they identified as needing improvement.

Armenia joins Horizon Europe, the EU research and innovation programme

On November 12, 2021, the European Commission and Armenia have signed the agreement granting the Republic of Armenia the association status to Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation programme (2021-2027). Armenian researchers, innovators and research entities can now participate in the €95.5 billion programme, under the same conditions as entities from the EU Member States.

The 100-m radio telescope of the MPIfR: Call for Proposals open

Access to the 100-m radio telescope of the MPIfR, one of the World’s largest fully steerable instrument is open to all qualified astronomers. Use of the instrument by scientists from outside the MPIfR is strongly encouraged. The institute can provide support and advice on project preparation, observation, and data analysis. Access/funding is offered through the ORP (Opticon RadioNet Pilot) project.

European ALMA Regional Centre

The European ALMA Regional Centre (ARC) provides the interface between the ALMA project and the European science community. The ARC is staffed by scientists with expertise in radio astronomy and interferometry and it supports its users throughout the lifetime of a project, from proposal preparation to data analysis. Users that want to visit an ARC node for a face-to-face visit can apply for funding through the ORP (Opticon RadioNet Pilot). 

The Westerbork Apertif Long Term Archive (ALTA) is a brand new facility offering to the world-wide astronomical community free virtual access to data and scientific products produced from all sky surveys of the Northern sky that will be conducted with the new Apertif frontend of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), as well as tools to query, further exploit and perform data mining of these products adaptable to diverse research goals. The access/funding offered through the ORP (Opticon RadioNet Pilot) project.
