ALMA Traces History of Water in Planet Formation Back to the Interstellar Medium

ALMA Traces History of Water in Planet Formation Back to the Interstellar Medium

Scientists studying a nearby protostar have detected the presence of water in its circumstellar disk. The new observations made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) mark the first detection of water being inherited into a protoplanetary disk without significant changes to its composition. These results further suggest that the water in our Solar System formed billions of years before the Sun. The new observations were published in Nature: “Deuterium-enriched water ties planet-forming disks to comets and protostars,” J. Tobin et al, 8 March 2023, Nature, DOI. Read the ALMA press release here.

Open call for the IAC Early-career visitor program

Open call for the IAC Early-career visitor program

The call for the IAC Early-career visitor program is open. It has two basic and interconnected goals: to promote both individual scientific development during first years of postdoctoral experience and to enhance the role of the IAC as a reference center at an international level.

The IAC offers an ideal research and work environment, with more than 200 active scientists, over 30 lines of research ranging from solar physics to cosmology, and the management of two of the most important astrophysical observatories in the world. Read more.

Deadline for visits between July and December 2023:  May 1st, 2023.

POLICY NEWS

EU executive agencies – three-year evaluation

The EC has launched a public consultation as part of the three-year evaluation of the six EU executive agencies. It will assess what has been achieved in terms of effectiveness, efficiency and coherence gains by delegating operational tasks to these agencies. More information here.

The Feedback period is 10 March 2023 - 07 April 2023.

ESFRI: Strategic analysis of the research infrastructure landscape

ESFRI invites Research Infrastructures (RI) of European importance and other ESFRI Stakeholder Forum members to provide their insights on topics of the current work plan. Written contributions to the Landscape Analysis can be provided here and will be accepted until 7 April 2023. A further opportunity for feedback on the draft Landscape Analysis will be provided at an ESFRI workshop in September 2023.

EU Knowledge Valorisation Week 2023

This year's EU Knowledge Valorisation Week will take place 25-28 April in online format. It will invites research and innovation actors and is dedicated to sustainability, intellectual property management and industry-academia collaboration. For the first time, practical training for researchers, young innovators and interested parties will also be offered.

Common mistakes to avoid when applying for Horizon Europe funding

The EC has prepared some Dos and Don’ts to help prepare a quality proposal. Read here.

Recommendations on codes of practice for the management of intellectual asset and standardisation

The EC published a Recommendation on a Code of practice on the management of intellectual asset for knowledge valorisation and a Recommendation on a Code of practice on Standardisation. Read the EC press release here.

MeerKAT Radio Telescope Call for Observing Proposals

MeerKAT Radio Telescope Call for Observing Proposals

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) announces an opportunity to apply for observing time on the MeerKAT telescope.

Deadline: 03 May 2023, 12:00 UTC

European ALMA Regional Centre

The European ALMA Regional Centre (ARC) provides the interface between the ALMA project and the European science community. The ARC is staffed by scientists with expertise in radio astronomy and interferometry and it supports its users throughout the lifetime of a project, from proposal preparation to data analysis. Users that want to visit an ARC node for a face-to-face visit can apply for funding through the ORP project.

The Westerbork Apertif Long Term Archive (ALTA) offers to the world-wide astronomical community free virtual access to data and scientific products produced from all sky surveys of the Northern sky that will be conducted with the new Apertif frontend of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), as well as tools to query, further exploit and perform data mining of these products adaptable to diverse research goals. The access/funding offered through the ORP project.

LOFAR Long Term Archive (LTA) is a long-established archive and access facility supporting the international LOFAR telescope. It is currently the largest radio astronomical archive in the world already exceeding 45 PB from LOFAR’s past 10 years of operations. The LTA provides a central and key resource for all observed LOFAR astronomical science programs where the data become public within 12 months of first creation. The access/funding is offered through the ORP project.
