Astronomers witness the birth of a very distant cluster of galaxies from the early Universe

By | 2023-03-30T07:28:15+00:00 March 30th, 2023|press release|

Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), of which ESO is a partner, astronomers have discovered a large reservoir of hot gas in the still-forming galaxy cluster around the Spiderweb galaxy — the most distant detection of such hot gas yet. Galaxy clusters are some of the largest objects known in the Universe and this [...]

ALMA Traces History of Water in Planet Formation Back to the Interstellar Medium

By | 2023-03-10T09:53:50+00:00 March 10th, 2023|press release|

Scientists studying a nearby protostar have detected the presence of water in its circumstellar disk. The new observations made with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) mark the first detection of water being inherited into a protoplanetary disk without significant changes to its composition. These results further suggest that the water in our Solar System [...]

MeerKAT discovers a distant galaxy has very large hydrogen atoms

By | 2023-02-15T10:24:21+00:00 February 15th, 2023|announcement|

Using the MeerKAT radio telescope to study a distant galaxy towards PKS 1830-211, scientists discovered something unexpected: gas clouds made up of some of the largest hydrogen atoms in the universe, Rydberg atoms. It is the first time scientists observed these hydrogen atoms in a distant galaxy. Read the SARAO media release here. Image: © [...]
