The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) has published its Activity Report 2021-2023, providing a detailed account of its contributions to strengthening the European Research Area (ERA).
Initially developed in 2020 under the RadioNet project (EC GA 730562), the BRAND (BRoad bAND) receiver has been successfully tested and partially commissioned at the Effelsberg 100-meter radio telescope, marking a significant advancement in radio astronomy. Designed by Gino Tuccari (INAF) with contributions from MPIfR, OSO, ASTRON, Yebes Observatory, and Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre, [...]

An international team of researchers has detected a binary star orbiting close to Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy. It is the first time a stellar pair has been found in the vicinity of a supermassive black hole. The discovery, based on data collected by the European Southern Observatory’s [...]
After taking the first images of black holes, the ground-breaking Event Horizon Telescope and the Global mm-VLBI Array poised to reveal how black holes launch powerful jets into space. Now, a research team led by scientists from the Onsala Space Observatory, the University Würzburg and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy has shown that [...]
The shadow of the black hole in Messier 87 has been imaged with global radio array telescopes over the last years. Joint campaigns have been coordinated annually ever since. An international team of researchers has just released the results of a large campaign on M87 of Event Horizon Telescope and Global mm-VLBI Array observations in [...]
The International Conference on Research Infrastructures (ICRI) 2024, hosted in Brisbane/AU from 3-5 December 2024, brought together policymakers, research institution leaders, and facility operators from around the globe to discuss the pressing challenges and future of research infrastructures. This biennial event provided a unique platform for collaboration, exploration, and innovation across various scientific disciplines. Among [...]
The SKAO has signed a memorandum of understanding with the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) with the goal of establishing an SKAO Africa Programme in the next 12 months. Read more here.
The most sensitive map of the gravitational wave sky to date was produced by an international collaboration of researchers. To achieve this goal, the scientists analysed 4.5 years of pulsar data taken with the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa, one of the most powerful radio telescopes in the world. The MeerKAT Pulsar Timing Array [...]
