JIVE tutorial on the new capabilities for VLBI data processing in CASA – apply before September 15, 2018

At the end of the EVN symposium in Granada, JIVE will organize on October 11, 2018, JIVE a tutorial to demonstrate the new capabilities for VLBI data processing in CASA. With the imminent release of CASA 5.3 the first experimental VLBI tools will be included in the package (see the latest CASA Newsletter for more details). With support from  IAA-CSIC, JIVE will introduce on this afternoon [...]

Surprise discovery provides new insights into stellar deaths

Astronomers, working on a project to detect supernovas, made a surprise discovery when they found that one supernova explosion was actually a star being pulled apart by a supermassive black hole. This rare stellar death, known as a tidal disruption event, or TDE, occurs when the powerful gravity of a supermassive black hole rips apart [...]

Cosmic dust: Origin, applications and implications 11-15 June 2018 in Copenhagen

The international conference on cosmic dust that runs every fifth year is now running in Copenhagen. Research on cosmic dust has grown in importance over the past decade due to the unparalleled sensitivity of new astronomical facilities operating at radio regimes, such as the ALMA array, and the Planck, and Herschel satellites. These five-yearly meetings give dust-specialists [...]

The HI/Story of the Nearby Universe | 10-12 September 2018 in Groningen

The Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of the University of Groningen organises a three day workshop focusing on the observational and astrophysical importance of neutral hydrogen in our understanding of galaxy evolution.  This workshop aims to discuss in particular the use of neutral hydrogen observations to investigate the relevant physical processes of gas accretion, removal and outflows.  In addition, the [...]

RadioNet supports “The Power of Faraday Tomography — towards 3D mapping of cosmic magnetic fields”

The workshop “The Power of Faraday Tomography — towards 3D mapping of cosmic magnetic fields” will take place next week in Miyazaki, Japan. It focuses on a powerful new analysis technique, Faraday Tomography, that enables disentangling overlapping Faraday rotation contributions along a line of sight. Faraday Tomography of polarized synchrotron emission will thus allow us to [...]
