The Event Horizon Telescope observes a bent jet near a black hole. A team led by Jae-Young Kim at the MPI für Radioastronomie has imaged the jet origin at 20 µas resolution and found that deep in the quasar 3C279’s heart, something weird goes on: rather than a simple straight structure, two perpendicular features appear, and they move within a few days at apparent speeds twenty times larger than the velocity of light.
