ESO Explores Next Ground-Based Project Beyond 2040

With the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) nearing completion, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is looking ahead to its next major project. Under a new initiative called Expanding Horizons, ESO is inviting proposals from the global scientific community for a next-generation ground-based facility to be developed in the 2040s.

The new programme could include a completely new telescope, a major upgrade to an existing facility, or a combination of both. Proposals must align with ESO’s long-term vision and demonstrate scientific value, technical feasibility, sustainability, and potential for international collaboration.

The selected project will be owned and operated by ESO, either independently or in partnership with other organisations. The final decision will be made by ESO’s Council, based on recommendations from its scientific and executive bodies.

ESO aims to build on the legacy of its world-class observatories—including the Very Large Telescope (VLT), ALMA, and the upcoming CTA—by identifying the next facility capable of addressing the major astronomical challenges of the coming decades.

  • July 2024 – July 2026: Preparatory Phase — ESO will engage the scientific community through workshops on future scientific challenges and emerging technologies.
  • Q3 2026 – 1 June 2027: Call for Ideas — Proposals will be accepted, with Letters of Intent due by 1 December 2026.
  • June 2027 – September 2028: Assessment Phase — Proposals will be reviewed by ESO’s Executive and a Senior Science Committee, with community input.
  • October – December 2028: Decision — ESO’s Council will make the final selection, followed by an early design study phase.
