The International LOFAR (LOw Frequency ARray) Telescope (ILT) is looking for a Policy Officer.

ILT is a world-leading distributed radio astronomy research infrastructure, with cohesively operated facilities, in part owned by a steadily growing number of diverse partners around Europe, and anchored by ASTRON (the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy). An ambitious upgrade, LOFAR2.0, is underway to keep the infrastructure at the cutting edge of science throughout the next decade and beyond. Considering the ongoing evolution, the ILT, now a foundation under NL law, is working to apply for and implement a change to a robust European governance: LOFAR ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium), to be hosted by the Netherlands.

The new Policy Officer will support the Director ILT and in future the Director LOFAR ERIC.

The focus will be on

  • Furthering LOFAR ERIC application (stewardship of process, EC & partner relations, policy preparations)
  • Deployment and implementation of LOFAR ERIC
  • Policy support to institutional functioning of LOFAR ERIC
  • Strengthening of LOFAR ERIC (extending partnerships, support base and network)
  • Coordinated (multi-)national funding acquisition

Job requirements:

  • Experience in the institutional functioning of internationally oriented scientific/technological research organisations
  • Preferably experience with public (national, multi-national, EC) science policy-making, and funding schemes
  • Has a drive to contribute to organising flourishing and efficient collaborations among diverse partners
  • Proven organisational skills, analytically strong, flexible problem-solver, creative mindset, bridge-builder
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English (proficiency in Dutch is an advantage)
  • Master level required, PhD level preferred; experience in conducting research in physical sciences an advantage

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement Research Institutes.

ILT offers:

  • A full-time 38 hours/ week temporary appointment for a period of 4 years in the service of the Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I)
  • A gross monthly salary on a full-time basis, in the range of € 3.778 to € 5.907 depending on relevant experience
  • A holiday allowance of 8% and a year-end bonus of 8.33% of the gross annual salary
  • A solid pension scheme (ABP)
  • 42 vacation days per year on a full-time basis

The International LOFAR Telescope is hosted by ASTRON, the Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy, with offices in a beautiful natural setting near the village of Dwingeloo, the Netherlands.
