The annual meeting of the RadioNet Board was held on March 20th, 2018 in the Harnack House of the Max Planck Society in Berlin. At the beginning of the meeting, the RadioNet Coordinator, Anton Zensus, summarized to project status after one year. He stressed the purpose of the collaboration, namely to create a coherent and sustainable radio astronomy community in Europe. The Board was impressed by the reports from the work package leaders, which clearly showed that the joint research activities, the networking and training activities, and the access to the RadioNet research infrastructure are being performed efficiently and according to plan.
For the first time, the Board had invited independent experts from research consortia (e.g. ASTRONET, OPTICON, SKA) and from Industry to advise them about the performance of and challenges to RadioNet. While the Advisory Group members applauded the performance of the activity, they also reminded the Board that the SKA project may change the landscape of radio astronomy in Europe. Thus there is an urgent need for dialogue on the future and the sustainability of the RadioNet community.
