The World’s Eye on the Sky
SKA-VLBI Key Science Projects and Operations Workshop
The VLBI community proposed to make the phase I SKA telescopes available for global VLBI observations. The VLBI Science Working Group for the SKA, with support from the EC-funded JUMPING JIVE project, worked out the technical requirements and defined the interfaces needed for realising SKA-VLBI. The next step is to establish the key science areas where VLBI can contribute, work out science use cases in detail, and find the best strategies to include VLBI in SKA Key Science Projects.
The aim of the workshop is to introduce the VLBI capabilities and observing modes of the SKA1 telescopes to the broader VLBI community, and present the latest results in the SKA high priority science areas where VLBI will make an impact. The participants will discuss ideas and possible strategies for major SKA-VLBI Key Science observing programmes, and the impact of global VLBI observations for astronomical research in the future in general. In addition, the workshop will seek input regarding the VLBI requirements for the future SKA Regional Centres, and operational aspects of SKA-VLBI.
The SKA-VLBI workshop is receives financial support from RadioNet, for the support of 2 speakers, and it is a JUMPING JIVE initiative (WP10 – “VLBI with the SKA”), with additional support from the SKA Organization.
