More than 200 participants from 86 countries met at the United Nations in Vienna for the Workshop on Dark and Quiet Skies for Science and Society, co-hosted by the SKAO and the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) from 9–11 December.
The workshop brought together astronomers, satellite operators, space agencies, policymakers, and diplomats to discuss ways to reduce the impact of satellite constellations on astronomy and to protect dark and quiet skies. The meeting highlighted the importance of international cooperation as satellite numbers continue to grow.
Opened by UNOOSA Director Aarti Holla-Maini and SKAO Director-General Prof. Philip Diamond, the event marked a key step in advancing global dialogue under the UN COPUOS agenda on dark and quiet skies.
